26 year old Defenceman Jake Willets has signed with Flames for the coming season.  The 6”1”, 190lb blueliner is coming off his best ECHL campaign having iced 70 times with Reading Royals where he had 3 goals and 22 points. 

Last term followed the bulk of the previous season that included an overseas stay for the first time with Erste Liga Corona Brasov, posting 4 goals and 15 points in 33 starts across all competitions. The American skater made his pro debut at the close of the 22-23 college term when he lined up with Toledo Walley for 10 ECHL games. He remained in the league the following season with Atlanta Gladiators and Walleye, before commencing 24-25 with Maine Mariners ahead of the mid season European foray.

Willets played 4 NCAA seasons, split between Ferris State and Lake Superior State Universities.  In all, he made 120 starts while posting 15 goals and 39 assists for 54 points and was selected to the NCAA, WCHA conference, All-Rookie Team in 2019-2020.  

“Jake is a 2-way type Defenceman, probably leaning a bit more on the Defensive aspect, but has shown a clear ability over the years to also be able to help out at the other end of the rink,” explained Head Coach Paul Dixon.

“We definitely have made an effort here to be much better Defensively and we think Jake, who has the bonus of being a Right shot guy, will help with that objective and help balance us nicely between Left and Right players at the position.” 

“We are looking forward to him making his EIHL debut with us when the new season starts.”
