Flames bagged 4 2nd period goals, including 3 of them in less than a 5 minute span to take a lead that laid the groundwork for a 5-4 win at Glasgow Clan.
Cole Ully set the hosts in front just ahead of the opening 10 minute mark, but Josh Waller on a powerplay not long after that levelled. Last minute minor penalties to Dan Catenacci and Matt Alvaro put Flames down a pair of men for more than 80 seconds, but they killed the end of the period and the beginning of the next to get back to even strength.
Less than 5 minutes into the 2nd, Waller struck again to give the visitors their first lead of the contest. Lewis Hook and Brett Welychka at 26:28 and 28:01, respectively, opened a 3 goal gap, but Matt Barry got one back at the halfway point to bring the Scottish club within a pair. To close the frame, the contestants traded goals with Daniel Tedesco re-storing a 3 goal lead during a run of 4 on 4 play, their shortage due to a Major and game misconduct to Charlie Curti, before Clan erased that one when they resumed on the powerplay that followed with Liam Finlay making it a 2 goal affair once again.
About 7 minutes into the 3rd, and again on a powerplay, Ully had Clan nearly back to even, but they were unable to square it with their net empty and an extra skater for the final 90 or so seconds.
Eamon McAdam got the win with 22 saves on 26 shots against Landon Bow who was 9 of 14.
“Any win when you come this far is a good one,” said Paul Dixon, “but it was a bit more nerve racking after getting a good lead early in the 2nd.”
“We were at a disadvantage in terms of such a wide gap in powerplay chances where they scored a couple on many more opportunities than we had, including a major and an extended 3 on 5, and we only 1 chance across the evening, but that happens some nights and we can credit the guys for finding a way to still come through it with a win.”
“At the end of the day we took 2 very important points to help put some distance between us and them in the standings so certainly a valuable outcome that sets ups up for Saturday when Nottingham visits.”
